STEVE PALEY describes Thackley’s final warm-up match which saw the Dennboys complete an unbeaten pre-season schedule.

Bradford based Albion Sports were the visitors to Dennyfield for Thackley's final warm up match of the season. Notable absentees from the home side's line up were Matt Mathers, Nicky Matthews, Chris Davey, Josh Eastwod and Liam Moore. Lewis Morgan was included in the squad, having made a remarkable recovery from a foot injury sustained in the BPA match two weeks ago. The squad also included youngsters Matt Bilney and Rob Foulds.

Both teams were pretty evenly matched for the first quarter of the game, Thackley playing the ball from the back but either finding the wrong colour shirt or making the wrong decision with the final pass. Whilst Albion's approach was much more direct, playing the ball up field to utilise the height of their tall forwards. With the few half chances that were created, the forwards did not really test either keeper. That was until about the half hour mark. Thackley were beginning to retain more of the possession and should have taken the lead. Mark Bett cut in from the left and unleashed a shot which Albion keeper, Aaron Brian, did well to parry, Dale Ramsay was unable to stab the free ball into the net, his effort clearing the bar. This was the only real chance of the half and the teams went into the break on level terms.

Thackley made three substitutions at the start of the SECOND HALF, Lewis Morgan, Adam Hill and Archie Watson replacing Luke Rhodes, Matt Hall and Dale Ramsay. The match continued much as the first half had finished, the home side having more of the play whilst creating little up front. On sixty three minutes the Dennyboys took the lead from a defensive error. A corner on the right was not cleared and the ball fell to ADAM HILL on the edge of the box, he turned and shot past Brian. Further substitutions were made to ensure that all the squad got some playing time, but both keepers were having a relatively easy afternoon. Albion's best, and perhaps only, chance of the game came in the dying minutes, the ball being blasted over the bar from inside the box. The victory means that the Dennyboys have completed their pre season fixtures unbeaten. There were some influential players unavailable for this match, let us hope that everyone is available for next week's opening league game against Glasshoughton Welfare.

The first match of the season is always a difficult game and it would be nice to start the season with a win, especially knowing that Scarborough Athletic await Thackley the following Tuesday evening.
