16 APRIL 2013 - THACKLEY 6 – 0 SCARBOROUGH ATHLETIC - NCEL CUP R4

Steve Paley17 Apr 2013 - 21:43

Rudy Funk told the Scarborough press that it was “men against boys”. Thackley certainly deserved the win but as STEVE PALEY saw, it wasn’t all one way

Thackley entertained League Champions elect, Scarborough Athletic, at Dennyfield on Tuesday evening, in the last eight of the League Cup. Following their victory at Brighouse on Saturday the east coast club need just three points from their remaining two games to ensure they win the league. They play Retford United on Saturday at Queensgate, with this in mind, manager Rudy Funk, played a much changed team from the one that took the field at the weekend. Thackley also made changes from their last match, Matt Morgan was missing and James Firth returned after injury to the centre of the defence.

Thackley were all over their rivals in the opening minutes, Dempsey Smith rounding defender Sam Denton, his shot was deflected wide. Jerome White then had a long range effort fly over before, on eleven minutes, the Dennyboys took the lead. A free kick mid-way in the away half was clipped into the box by Chris Davey, Matt Hall headed against the bar, the ball dropped and Denton miscued into his OWN NET. Thackley could have doubled their lead a minute later, Jordan Missin made a good run down the left, away keeper Rory Skelton did well to parry his shot but the ball fell to Smith, Dom Richardson was on hand to block on the line. Seventeen minutes in and Skelton was called on to make another decent save, again Missin testing the keeper after running onto Davey's perfect through ball. The game was twenty minutes old before Scarborough mounted their first worthwhile attack. James Bennett picked out Henry Sibenge from a free kick, he had time to control the ball before firing just wide. Moments later Jermaine Hollis was inches away from getting to a ball played through the home defence by Bennett. Smith was giving the away defenders the run around and Harry Holden got in a last ditch tackle to prevent him shooting before Lewis Morgan's long range effort cleared the bar. The Dennyboys increased their lead on the half hour, it came from a corner given after Skelton had again managed to push Smith's shot around the post. Davey took the kick, Skelton failed to get his hands to the ball as it passed in front of goal but Anyanwu (Francis) Ugdchukulu, for some reason known only to himself, managed to get his to it. The referee immediately signalled a spot kick, Francis escaped a card, and CHRIS DAVEY dispatched the perfect penalty kick. Thackley continued to dominate but Scarborough came near to reducing the arrears on forty minutes, Hollis firing just over from the edge of the box. James Firth's header cleared the bar following a corner before the referee called time on the opening half. The Dennyboys were good value for their two goal lead, but the Seadogs had managed to create a couple of good chances.

Scarborough made a change at the beginning of the SECOND HALF, Paddy Miller replacing Francis. Skelton came to the rescue early on, saving Smith's rather weak shot with his legs before the Dennyboys got their third goal. Twice, Skelton made saves to deny Smith after the Thackley striker had cut back into the box, the second being turned around the post for a corner. MATT MATHERS met Davey's corner kick with his head and Skelton could only watch as the ball entered the net. Minutes later, DAVEY got his second and Thackley's fourth, looping the ball over Skelton from some thirty yards out. Nicky Matthews replaced Missin, as Thackley looked to capitalise on their superiority. Mathers headed just over from a corner before both Davey and Smith failed to get on the end of a perfectly weighted Matthews cross. Davey fired wide before the Dennyboys got their fifth. LEWIS MORGAN beating Skelton at the second attempt after picking up a Matthews cross. Thackley made a double substitution, Luke Rhodes and Luke Hudson replacing Matty Hall and Smith. The Seadogs did create a chance with fifteen minutes remaining, home keeper, Mark Bower, turned substitute's Bryan Hughes' shot for a corner, the resultant kick flashed across the home goal but no one could get to it. With just over ten minutes of normal time remaining the Dennyboys got their sixth, or should I say, Scarborough's defender Holden obliged, getting his head to a Matthews cross, he could only guide the ball into his OWN NET via the inside of the post. Twice Matthews had shots blocked before the Seadogs rallied in the closing stages. Sibenge curling one just wide, before getting in between Mathers and Bowers and heading past the post. In the end a six goal margin did not flatter the Dennyboys, had it not been for Skelton in the away goal, it could have been double figures.

Thackley progressed to the next round of the competition to play Worksop Parramore at Dennyfield, they are still on track to retain the trophy they won last year.
