Thackley travelled to Inkersall Road on Monday, the home of Staveley MW, to contest the League Cup Final against Louth Town. 'The White Wolves' had finished a creditable third in the first division and had only lost once in their last sixteen games, although Thackley were likely to start favourites, they would need to be at their best in order to retain the trophy they won at Parkgate last year. The Thackley team saw a number of changes from the one that took the field against Bridlington on Saturday. It was nice to see Brice Tiani back in the squad.
The match started in bright sunshine, the hot weather was sure to take its toll on the player's stamina. The opening minutes were a pretty even affair, both sides trying to come to terms with the very hard surface. It was Louth that drew first blood on nine minutes, a long throw from the left was helped across goal and Paul Goodhand headed in from close range. Thackley retaliated almost immediately, Chris Davey doing well down the right before firing across the face of the goal but no one got on the end of his cross. Davey turned provider five minutes later, releasing Jordan Missin down the left but Louth keeper, Ian McTaggert, made a good save from the Thackley striker. The Dennyboys were lucky not to fall further behind on twenty minutes, when danger man, Matt Kennedy, got clear down the left, he cut inside, rounded Thackley keeper, Mark Bower, only to see his shot across goal go inches wide. As the game progressed Thackley were beginning to see more of the possession, but the Louth defence were able to snuff out most attacks, using the long ball to create their main threat up front. The Dennyboys were denied an equaliser on thirty six minutes, Ross Daly put Nicky Matthews in the clear, with just McTaggert to beat, the Louth keeper came out to make an excellent save. Thackley were forced into making a change on forty minutes, skipper, Matt Morgan sustained a head injury and was replaced by Jerome White. As half time approached, the Dennyboys were getting on top and twice in quick succession they had goal bound efforts blocked. McTaggert did well to push a Davey free kick for a corner before the referee signaled an end to the first forty five minutes. Louth had started the better and scored the important opening goal, as the half progressed, Thackley had gradually started to get more into the game but were unable to break down a resolute a defence.
The SECOND HALF started much the same as the first had finished, Thackley taking control of the game but not really threatening the Louth goal, and in the first fifteen minutes, had only Paul Whiteley's long range shot, which cleared the bar, to show for their efforts. Louth had their moment, the ball being scrambled away for a corner after a Goodhand free kick. With twenty minutes to go, the Dennyboys got the goal that their play deserved and it was scored in exactly the same way as the one they had conceded. Andy Tasker's long throw was headed on by Matthews, JORDAN MISSIN rose to head past McTaggert. Two minutes later the Louth keeper did well to push away a Daly cross before both sides made substitutions. Thackley brought on Brice Tiani and Mark Bett, whilst Louth introduced Elliot Broughton and manager, Darryl Clare. The Thackley change had an immediate impact, Tiani picking up the ball in midfield and feeding into the path of Bett, NICKY MATTHEWS turned his cross in front of goal into the net from close range. Thackley looked for more goals, Missin shot narrowly wide before Louth mounted a counter attack, Bower saving a Kennedy shot with his legs. On eighty two minutes the Dennyboys made the game safe, with a great individual effort, BRICE TIANI turning on the edge of the box before firing the ball, which took a slight defection off Carl Martin, under McTaggert. Ross Brown replaced Dan Stevens before Broughton went close with a header. Thackley played out the dying minutes of the game before the referee called time on proceedings.
In the end, Thackley had deserved their victory, they had found it difficult to break down the Louth defence for three quarters of the game, once breached they went on to score two more. It had been a competitive game, the result in doubt until the final few minutes.
The victory was a fitting climax to bring to an end Vinnie's two year reign at Thackley, Dennyfield had been without a trophy for well over thirty years, he has managed to finish with one in successive seasons.
