17 AIGIST 2013 - THACKLEY 1 – 3 GUISBOROUGH TOWN - FA CUP EP ROUND

Steve Paley18 Aug 2013 - 20:59

The Dennyboys failed to capitalise on an early goal and early dominance. As STEVE PALEY says, a weakened Thackley could not rise to the occasion.

Thackley's quest for this year's FA Cup started on Saturday when Guisborough Town visited Dennyfield. The Northern League side were unbeaten after playing two competitive matches this season, both ending with the scores level.

The winner of this tie would be at home to either Silsden or Bridlington Town in the next round. Thackley had to make changes to the team that had started the previous two matches, four players were unavailable, which meant first starts of the season for Stuart Morrison, Andy Tasker, Carl Horsman, Liam Hudson and Josh Eastwood, Nathan Woodhead and Paul Butler were on the bench for the first time.

The Dennyboys made the best start possible, going in front after just five minutes. However, this was after debutant keeper, Stuart Morrison had pushed away a Daniel Johnson shot following a good run down the right. Thackley's goal came from a free kick, Callum White floating the ball to the far post for CARL HORMAN to head just inside the upright. Thackley looked to be on top and Matt Mathers fired high and wide after being put through by Lewis Morgan ten minutes into the game. However, Guisborough always carried a threat going forward, Michael Roberts and Johnson in particular looked lively up front, and they equalised on eighteen minutes, Morrison could only parry Johnson's shot as he cut in from the left, the ball rebounded to Roberts who calmly slotted it into the net. This gave the away side a lift and they started to keep the ball, Adam Gell was always available in mid field. Mike Garrod's cross caused a bit of concern for away keeper Ben Escritt, when it hit the roof of the net, before Callum Martin saw his shot go wide after a good run down the middle. Josh Eastwood and White picked up a couple of soft bookings for nothing tackles from a rather fussy referee, as the home side looked to regain the lead. Chances at either end were few and far between, Johnson fired past the post on the half hour before Guisborough took the lead four minutes later. Roberts knocked the ball into the box and the Thackley defence failed to clear, it fell to Martin, he gave Morrison no chance from close range. The rest of the half was played out at a rather slow tempo, neither side able to mount a meaningful attack and the away side took their one goal lead into the break. Thackley had started the half well but Guisborough had gradually got back into the game with two goals coming from defensive mistakes.

The Dennyboys started the SECOND HALF well and twice Mathers went close, firstly, trying to curl the ball past Escritt, the keeper saved at the second attempt, then firing wide from just outside the box. Both sides were forced into making a change, Thackley's James Firth limping off with an ankle injury to be replaced by Nathan Woodhead, shortly afterwards, the away side brought on Liam McPhillips for the injured Craig Bishop. Johnson fired across the front of goal before Thackley made their second substitution, Matty Hall coming on for Mike Garrod. Like the first half, the game lacked any real excitement, both teams were struggling to create chances. Morrison got down well to save from Roberts before Lewis Morgan hit a long range effort the was just wide of the post. Guisborough scored their third goal on sixty six minutes, Liam Hudson thought he had done enough, pushing Roberts wide of the goal but the away striker managed to get a shot off and the ball somehow squeezed between Morrison and the near post. Unfortunately, this did nothing to liven up the home side, they had struggled to get going all afternoon, and it was now going to be mammoth task to get anything from the game. Thackley brought on Jamie Scott for Andy Tasker as they tried to salvage something. The away side should have increased their lead with just over fifteen minutes remaining. A good run from Johnson gave Roberts an easy chance at the far post but the Guisborough striker fired wide with the goal at his mercy. Thackley went back down field and nearly reduced the arrears, Hudson's header hitting the bar with Escritt beaten. The away side made their final two changes before the game petered out with little further incident. Guisborough had deservedly won through to play Bridlington in the next round in two weeks’ time.

It had been a very disappointing performance from the Dennyboys, after two sterling efforts against Garforth and Maltby, they had failed to get to grips with this match, other perhaps than the opening minutes. The unavailability of four players had certainly not helped but the squad should be strong enough to overcome these sorts of difficulties. Thackley need to put this match behind them and make sure they extend their winning sequence in the league on Tuesday, when they take on Armthorpe Welfare at Dennyfield.
