Thackley entertained Glasshoughton Welfare at Dennyfield on Thursday night in a rearranged Fourth Round League Cup Game. The match was scheduled to be played last week but suffered a late call off due to a waterlogged pitch. Glasshoughton are in a mid table position in the First Division, Thackley had bounced back to winning ways last weekend with a 5-2 victory at Pontefract. If current form was to be the guide, it would be the Dennyboys that would be facing Bridlington Town at home in the Quarter Final of the competition.
The home side were a goal down after just four minutes, with their first attack of the game, Glasshoughton’s Ashley Scothern’s long range effort seemed to catch Thackley’s keeper Dayle Coleing unawares, bouncing in front of him and flying into the net. Andy Wood had the ball in the net three minutes later but the goal was ruled out for offside. Glasshoughton were not overawed by their higher placed opponents and looked the most likely to score. Scouthern got clear but fired over, and then Coleing made a fine save after his poor kick out fell to Kris Fawcett. Thackley were struggling to create chances from open play and it was from a corner, just before the half hour, that they got back on level terms. Jerry White heading in from Pat McGuire’s kick. Both Ryan Farrell and Joe Brown went close with shots which just cleared the bar in the remaining period of the first half which produced little in the way of constructive play.
Half time: Thackley 1. Glasshoughton Welfare 1.
Kris Hargreaves replaced White at the start of the second half. Thackley then scored two goals in quick succession which killed the game as a contest. On fourty eight minutes, Wood was brought down by away keeper Chris Myers, as he chased a ball to the bye line; he got up to convert the penalty with an unstoppable shot. Four minutes later, Hargreaves headed home from Tom Dugdale’s corner kick, given after Myers had made a great save from Farrell. Dan Pett replaced Brown on the hour, as Thackley were now in control of the game. Much of the play was in the mid field area, Thackley more than content with their lead, Glasshoughton unable to create any danger. Callum Padgett made way for Damian Hopkins before Myers again made a save, this time from Wood who had got clear, the away keeper pushing his shot around the post. With the game looking as if it was to be played out in a rather mundane fashion, Thackley struck twice in the last five minutes to liven things up. Pett’s ball to Dugdale wide on the left was rifled back inside the far post by the Thackley forward. Ryan Farrell then got clear to fire low past Myers to give a rather flattering score line for the Dennyboys.
Full time: Thackley 5 Glashoughton Welfare 1.
All this season Thackley have found it difficult to keep a clean sheet and again in this match gave their opponents a goal start. It took them half an hour to sort themselves out before getting back on level terms. After the break there was only one team in it.
The win brings another home game for Thackley, Bridlington Town will be the visitors to Dennyfield on Thursday 28th April in the Quarter Final of the competition.
Thackley are at home again on Saturday, the current favourites for promotion,Tadcaster Albion the visitors to Dennyfield. A clean sheet in this game would be an achievement in itself, in a must win match for the away side.
