The visitors won’t be the only thing new to the Meridian Stadium at Dennyfield though, as following the end of last season, a high turnover in players and staff means there will be many new faces in BD10 this season.

Taking the reins in the dugout for the Dennyboys for the campaign is Jamie Price, who joins the club following his departure from a coaching position at Selby Town.

Price has used the pre season period wisely, making a number of promising additions to the team as they look establish themselves in the league this season.

These include the returning Nathan Hunt, forward Hass Gorji, defender Kam Basi and goalkeeper Liam Wilson, amongst a whole host of other signings.

The pre season schedule saw the Dennyboys compete against some strong opposition, mostly from NCEL Division One, facing Selby, South Leeds and Ilkley Town, whilst they also hosted North West Counties Football League side South Liverpool.

Plenty of valuable knowledge was picked up in these games, with the team now in the best possible position as they look to being the new era with a win against one of the league’s newest sides.

The Opposition:

Travelling to BD10 for this opening day fixture will be newcomers Wombwell Town, who embark on their first season as a step five club following their play-off final victory over Dearne and District at the end of last season.

A relatively new club, ‘The Wellers’ were founded in 2018 and have enjoyed a rapid rise up the footballing pyramid, with them first joining the NCEL in 2023.

After a solid sixth place finish in 2023-24, their 2024-25 campaign was even better, with them narrowly missing out in a title race against Horbury Town, before overcoming Ilkley Town and Dearne and District in the play-offs to secure promotion.

Thus far, they have followed up this achievement well, enjoying a promising pre season that saw them pick up good results against the likes of Pontefract Collieries, Goole AFC and a squad from Worksop Town.

One thing to look out for tomorrow is the “long throw” deployed by Wombwell, with a specialist throw in taker able to reach the penalty box from long distances and a good tactic in the opposition arsenal which the Dennyboys will need to stand up to.

Player To Watch:

Wombwell possess plenty of ability in all areas of the pitch, with Oliver Fearon being one of the key players that could cause some issues for Jamie Price’s side.

After bagging a brace in the play-off final last season, Fearon has continued to be a vital part of the team, scoring three times in pre season to set the stage for what he will hope to be another historic season for the club.
