Wombwell Town V Thackley AFC- Match Preview
Macron NCEL Premier Division- Tuesday 2nd December 2025- Kick Off: 7.45pm
Match Preview by Cayden Sands
Overview:
Thackley’s travels continue on Tuesday night when they make the trip down to face Wombwell Town in the league.
This game comes following a disappointing outcome against Horbury Town on Saturday in which the Dennyboys succumbed to a 4-2 defeat.
The fixture also comes amidst a run of three games in a week, with a game against Frickley Athletic set to follow this one.
The Opposition:
After gaining promotion to the Premier Division of the NCEL at the end of last season, Wombwell Town have found life somewhat difficult in their new division.
The ‘Wellers’ currently sit bottom of the league on 14 points, but this is not a reflection of the effort that the team has been putting in.
The league has seen the team gain some strong results, including a pair of 2-1 wins against Parkgate FC and Campion AFC, as well as making some good progress in the FA Cup, Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup and FA Vase, being knocked out of the two national cups by Stockbridge Park Steels and Winsford United respectively after some good runs in both.
Key Players:
The top scorer for Wombwell in all competitions is Oliver Fearon, who sits on a respectable seven goals in all competitions for the club.
Meanwhile, Jordan Kershaw is just behind him with five to his name, whilst Nicholas Guest has four goals.
Previous Meeting:
The most recent meeting between Wombwell and Thackley came on the opening day of the NCEL Premier Division season, with the Dennyboys triumphing by a 1-0 scoreline.
In front of a very good crowd of over 300 at the Meridian Stadium at Dennyfield, Paul Walker managed to net the game’s only goal early in the second half.
Ground Description and Directions:
Wombwell’s Recreation Ground has perhaps one of the most unique features of any stadium in the NCEL, this being a kart track that surrounds the facility.
Having a capacity of roughly 1,500, the ground has enough covered capacity for 184 spectators, all of which is seated.
The ground also has a modern clubhouse and catering facilities, serving food and other refreshments.
