Wombwell Town 1 V 2 Thackley AFC- Match Report

Goals from Toby Marriott and Hass Gorji helped Thackley secure a very late 2-1 win against Wombwell Town.

The hosts started the game well and had the game’s first real opportunities, though Thackley were able to deal with these quite well, with them soaking up a good amount of pressure at points.

Jamie Price’s side then had their first big opportunity of the game after 23 minutes, coming from a throw in by Tom Whelan that was flicked by Keanan Mannings, though Marriott was unable to get on the end of the header and it went out for a goal kick.

The hosts then had a big opportunity of their own not long after, this being a promising overhead kick inside a crowded penalty area that just missed the mark.

Jaedyn Chibanga would then give Thackley another good opportunity, doing well to dribble past his markers and have a go at goal, which was ultimately saved by Kyle Wass.

Some good defensive resilience would prove vital for the hosts, giving them the chance to capitalise on Thackley’s difficulties going forward, which they managed to do after 34 minutes courtesy of Edward Agnew, who got to a loose ball and got into a one on one with Liam Wilson, giving him time to place the ball past the keeper, giving his team the advantage.

The Dennyboys would recover well from the setback and looked strong in the minutes leading up to half time, but they were unable to capitalise on that late momentum, giving Wombwell the lead as the referee’s whistle brought the first half to an end.

The hosts began the second half in a very similar manner to the first as they had some good opportunities.

After an early effort hit the side netting, it would be the 54th minute that proved crucial in deciding the game’s outcome, with a ball across the box to Agnew forcing a brilliant save out of Wilson after the forward’s resulting chance.

Thackley capitalised on this shortly after, equalising just two minutes later after a free kick from Paul Walker took a deflection, which Marriott pounced on to level the score.

Prior to this period, Gorji would be introduced to the game from the bench, with him making an immediate impact and having a good opportunity after 58 minutes that saw a blocked effort.

Both teams continued to press hard for the goal that would put them ahead, but both defences ensured that they would need to work for said goal, limiting both sides to half chances.

The 72nd minute once again saw Gorji involved, this time putting the ball just wide of the post.

A similar case would happen after 80 minutes, with Gorji again just putting the ball wide, whilst Marriott also had opportunities very soon following this, both being promising headers, but he was unable to convert either.

During Thackley’s momentum, the hosts would be reduced to ten men following a sin bin, which gave Price’s side the chance to capitalise and get the winner.

After being denied by a disallowed goal on 89 minutes, Thackley would get their reward deep into added time, with Gorji latching onto a lofted ball into the box and volleying it, beating Wass and securing a great victory for the Dennyboys in the process, with some style added into it.

The referee would bring the game to an end shortly after, with the team securing a massive three points as a result of this win.
