Retford FC V Thackley AFC- Match Preview
Macron NCEL Premier Division- Tuesday 1st September 2026- Kick Off: 7.45pm
Match Preview by Cayden Sands
Overview:
Thackley’s travels in the NCEL Premier Division resume on Tuesday as they travel to Retford to face Retford FC.
Following on from the last gasp 3-3 draw with Handsworth FC, Thackley will be determined to have a much less stressful affair on this occasion as their search for their first win of the league season continues.
In a boost for the team, Marcel Stepniewski’s first goal for the club will provide a much needed confidence increase for the forward as he hopes to add to his tally.
The Opposition:
Retford FC come into this fixture in an upper mid table position.
The ‘Choughs’ find themselves eighth in the league table, just one place and one goal behind their local rivals Retford United and level on points with some of the season’s early play-off contenders, who all have ten to their name.
Some positive results up to this point a 2-1 victory over Campion AFC, a recent 2-0 triumph against Frickley Athletic and perhaps most notably, a 3-0 win away at Parkgate FC.
Crucially however, Retford are yet to win a home match in the league, something the Dennyboys will be hoping to keep the same after this game.
They have also progressed in the FA Vase, defeating Euxton Villa 6-5 on penalties in their opener in the competition.
Key Players:
Leading the goals for Retford so far is Iren Wilson, who sits with a good total of four to his name at this stage of the campaign, all of which have been in the league.
Meamwhile, Aaron Sennett-Neilson has also started the season in good form, scoring three times across league and cup games.
Previous Meeting:
Retford and Thackley have never met at any competitive level of football, making this fixture a notable one.
Despite this, the Dennyboys have visited the town before, facing Retford United in league fixtures over the years, the most recent of these being in 2016 when a brace from Ryan Farrell secured a 2-0 win for Thackley.

Retford FC’s Green Bros’ Rail Stadium is one of the league’s newer grounds thanks to Retford being a relatively young club.

The ground also has a clubhouse and catering facilities, serving all of the usual food and drink choices.
