Thackley AFC 2 v 2 Parkgate FC – Match Report

NCEL Premier Division– Saturday 1st February 2025 – Kick off 3pm.

Match report by Cayden Sands

A pair of goals from Antony Brown and Finn Donovan provided hope for Thackley, but a stubborn showing from Parkgate would mean the two teams had to settle for a 2-2 draw at the Meridian Stadium at Dennyfield.

With Grech-Brooksbank and Sugden both serving their final match of suspension, Tektas and Bodle came into the starting XI with Jancevski dropping to the bench, joined by Barnes with Donovan also returned to the starting lineup after injury.

After a strong start from the visitors that saw the Dennyboys under some early pressure, the team were able to gain some control of the game, with Brown being set up twice in the space of two minutes with some excellent passes, with the latter of the two chances forcing a good save out of Jordan Greaves before Donovan wasn’t able to convert the rebound from just a few yards out with an open goal waiting.

After an exciting first 10 minutes, the next period of the game saw a lack of the same frantic nature that had been the theme of the first period, with the Parkgate defence doing very well to hold Thackley back as the hosts dominated possession.

Meanwhile, the visitors enjoyed some slight chances in the form of a series of corners that did trouble the Dennyboys, but ultimately failed to produce at big moment, with a powerful effort from Harry Day that hit the side netting being the only real highlight.

Life would be injected back into the game in the 34th minute thanks to the game’s first goal, which came courtesy of Brown after the forward managed to head the ball down to Donovan before the winger’s shot was saved by Greaves, but this didn’t stop Brown, who converted the rebound to give Thackley a deserved lead.

Following this, the Dennyboys would continue to pressure Parkgate up to half time, with a late volleyed effort from Brown being the best chance of note in the half’s later stages. Joe Mitchell also blazed an effort just wide after the ball rebounded to him in what looked like a certain goal for all in the stadium.

The referee’s whistle would then bring to an end an interesting half that whilst it saw a goal, perhaps should have seen more, with the second half having all the potential to add to the scoreline.

HALF-TIME: Thackley AFC 1-0 Parkgate FC

The hosts began the second half quickly, with Tawheed Ahmed doing well in the 48th minute to set up Donovan inside the box, but the winger could only see his effort curl up and over the bar.

As the half continued, the game appeared to be taking on a similar style to that of the first half, with both teams doing well to counteract each other’s strengths, leaving it in a state in which one moment could change the outlook.

This moment would come in the 63rd minute when seemingly out of nowhere, Parkgate would equalise following a free kick that was delivered into the box before landing with Liam Tomlinson from a knock down, who poked the ball home to level the scoreline.

The Dennyboys wouldn’t be easily pegged back however, with Brown and substitute Slater Barnes combining with each other twice in a quick period to trouble Greaves between the sticks, but neither man was able to make the most of their opportunity.

As the game entered the dying minutes, both sides were desperate to find a goal and establish an advantage at an important time, something that Thackley were able to do in the 74th minute when the Brown and Barnes duo combined again, with the latter’s pass helping the former set up Donovan, whose shot made it through a crowded box before landing in the bottom right-hand corner to restore the Dennyboys’ lead.

However, Parkgate would then enjoy a wave of momentum of their own that would culminate in an 83rd minute goal when a corner would fool the Thackley team before being punched away by Luke Wilson and then deflecting off of Ashton Stringer and into the net, once again levelling the game and setting up an interesting ending to the game.

The hosts would enjoy the majority of the momentum as the game came to a close, with a promising ball across the box from Donovan in the 88th minute narrowly missing Brown in what was the game’s last major moment, bringing to an end an exciting second half in which both side had to settle for a point on the day.
