Overview:
Thackley return to action on Saturday when they welcome play off chasing Pickering Town to the Meridian Stadium at Dennyfield.
Following last week’s draw at Penistone Church in which the team endured a very stubborn defensive display against their South Yorkshire opponents, everyone involved will be hoping they can go one better and finally pick up their first win of 2025.
The team will hopefully be further bolstered by a very strong field of players to select the team from, with Ben Bodle vying to be fit to play again, whilst Lewis Sugden could also return.
The Opposition:
Travelling South to Thackley are Pickering Town, a club that have emerged as an unexpected play-off contender in the past few weeks.
In recent fixtures, ‘Pikes’ have picked up a number of notable results such as a 5-0 triumph over Tadcaster Albion in their most recent game, alongside a convincing 3-0 victory over Campion, the latter of which came away from home.
Other notable positive results for the club include a 3-0 victory against Rossington Main and a 4-1 win against Goole AFC.
These results clearly show the team’s capabilities when it comes to scoring goals, with the player currently leading the charts being Joe Wood, who sits with 10 goals to his name in all competitions.
Behind him is George Brown, who sits with seven, whilst Omar Sanyang and Souleymane Coulibaly both have six goals.
Previous Meetings:
The two teams have met on many occasions in the past, with honours about even. However, last season, Thackley took all six points from their two league game. In the Dennyfield encounter, Thackley picked up a 2-0 victory thanks to late goals from Tom Greaves and George Green. When the sides met at Mill Lane, George Green again got his name on the scoresheet before Kieran Stares levelled the game for the hosts. Matt Dempsey restored Thackley’s lead in the second half to claim the win.
This season, Pickering took all three points in today’s reverse fixture, a single goal from Omar Sanyang just before the break settling the game. The whole day was one of frustration for Thackley, their coach was delayed en route to the ground due to a crash, this led to a late arrival, hurried preparation and a delayed kick off. This continued into the game in which Thackley were mostly on top and created quite a few chances but were caught out with a breakaway goal.
