Overview:
The final game of the NCEL Premier Division season has arrived for Thackley as they welcome Barton Town to the Meridian Stadium at Dennyfield.
Following last week’s 2-2 draw with Goole AFC and Albion Sports’ 2-1 victory over Rossington Main on Monday, this leaves the Dennyboys with their play off hopes out of their own hands, with the results involving Beverley Town and Albion being the key to deciding the team’s fate.
Last week’s draw was made all the more difficult after the dismissal of goalkeeper Luke Wilson for a handball outside the penalty area, with the long serving shot stopper missing the visit of Barton due to suspension.
However, ahead of the registration deadline. Danny Forrest bolstered the ranks between the sticks with the signing of Harry Garman from last week’s opponents, with the keeper expected to start this all or nothing encounter.
Further positives from last week were the returns to the starting lineup of Joe Mitchell and Antony Brown after injury, and with a further week of training secured the return of these senior players further bolsters the Dennyboys for a crucial fixture.
The Opposition:
Barton Town are the visitors to the Meridian Stadium at Dennyfield on the final day of the season, though unlike Thackley, the East Yorkshire side have nothing to play for, with them being well clear of relegation, whilst also having no play off hopes.
The ‘Swans’ have endured a difficult run since their previous meeting with the Dennyboys, with them picking up only two wins in the eight games that have followed it.
These games saw the team defeat Campion AFC 1-0 and Eccleshill United 5-2, both away from home.
You’d have to go back to January for their most recent home victory, this being a 3-2 win over Golcar United.
The less positive results in recent weeks have included a 5-3 defeat to Penistone Church, a 2-1 loss away to Goole and a 3-0 loss to champions Silsden AFC in their most recent game.
Thomas Waudby currently leads the way in the club’s goal scoring charts and is likely to stay there, with him picking up 19 goals in all competitions this season, whilst Ali Spencer Aydemir has 11.
Previous Meeting:
The previous encounter between the two clubs saw Thackley leave one of their longest trips of the season (and one of the coldest) with the three points, their first of 2025.
This came thanks to a brace from forward Antony Brown, whose goals secured a 2-0 victory on the occasion.
Summary:
The result of a long season comes down to a three way shoot out between Thackley, Albion Sports and Beverley Town for the two final play off spots. Albion Sports travel to Handsworth and Beverley Town travel to Tadcaster Albion. There are various computations of results which could see any of the three teams in those two spots, but all the Dennyboys can do is focus on matters at hand at the Meridian Stadium at Dennyfield and hope for a final twist in the tale to try extend the season into the play offs.
Regardless of the result tomorrow, it will see Thackley record a higher position than last season in the table, a higher points total and further developments on and off the field. All at Thackley AFC thank supporters and sponsors once again for your support this season. We look forward to you cheering on the team once again tomorrow.
