It seems like only yesterday Thackley Ladies were opening the season away at Ackworth Girls - a hard fought win in muddy conditions but after 18 league games they sit top of the table, gaining promotion back to the Premier Division. On the 4th May they also won the league cup, beating 3 Premier Division sides on their route the lifting the cup in a momentous season which culminated in a rearranged fixture away to Golcar United FC on a sunny Wednesday evening - the prize this time? The invincible league season.
After a guard of honour by Golcar United FC, the game started a little cagey from both sides, with passing often hampered by the sandy pitch but as time passed Thackley Ladies grew more and more into the game. In the 17th minute this was rewarded when Amy Wood worked hard to intercept Golcar playing out from the back, she then turned and found the run of Sophie Moulden who then leathered the ball into the opposite corner to give The Denny Girls the lead and Moulden her 14th goal of the season. Thackley Ladies continued to control the vast majority of possession in the first half and brought their 1-0 lead back into the dressing room at half time.
Having only conceded 5 goals in the league all season, and only 2 away from home The Denny Girls had the confidence and experience to continue that trend.Golcar pushed and pressed but to no avail and the fixture ended 1-0.
A successful season and credit to Steve Winterburn & his coaching team, all the Thackley Ladies and the staff behind the scenes making food and drinks.
To have only conceded 5 goals in the league is some achievement in itself and as Stephanie Barraclough hangs up her gloves we know in Bryony Morris we are in safe hands.
