Thackley Women AFC’s FA Cup journey came to an end at Brodsworth Main as the hosts secured a 2–1 victory in an entertaining and hard-fought contest.
On a warm, sunny afternoon in front of a crowd of more than 200 spectators, both sides produced an exciting game as they battled for a place in the next round.
Thackley started brightly and immediately put the home defence under pressure. Within the opening minutes, Em Senior threaded a superb through ball between the Brodsworth defenders, allowing Molly Ellis to race onto it and deliver a dangerous cross across the face of goal. Lizzie Freeney was agonisingly close to making the connection, before Senior then went close herself with a shot that drifted wide.
Brodsworth began to push forward, but Thackley’s defence remained organised and dealt well with the pressure. Ellis continued to cause problems on the counter-attack, making several strong runs down Thackley’s right flank and stretching the home defence.
Brodsworth responded with a dangerous attack down their right, taking the ball into the Thackley penalty area. However, keeper Bryony Morris was quick off her line to block the attempted cross and make an important clearance.
With both sides continuing to attack, the two defences remained resolute until Brodsworth found a way through. A ball played down their left resulted in a cross into the Thackley penalty area. Demi Godson, who had picked up an injury during the warm-up and was struggling, was unable to reach the delivery. The Brodsworth forward took advantage, sending the ball beyond Morris to give the hosts the lead.
Godson was substituted, with Georgia Clipson coming on to replace her.
Thackley continued to look for a response, but on the half-hour mark Brodsworth doubled their advantage. A ball played into the middle was headed forward by a Brodsworth defender before taking a wicked bounce into the air. The ball spiralled over the Thackley defence, allowing the Brodsworth forward to race through and calmly slot the ball into the bottom-left corner.
Thackley refused to let their heads drop and immediately increased the pressure. Becca Hunt came close with a shot that narrowly missed the target before sustained pressure forced a throw-in on the right.
Clipson took the throw quickly to Ellis, who charged down the wing before delivering a high cross towards the goal. Em Senior met the delivery perfectly, heading the ball into the net to pull one back for Thackley.
Just before the break, Thackley were awarded a free kick around 25 yards from goal. Chelsea Morton stepped up and produced a stunning effort that curled over the defensive wall, only to crash against the crossbar.
Thackley went into half-time trailing 2–1, but with plenty of encouragement to take into the second half.
The visitors emerged after the interval looking more composed and continued to apply pressure in search of an equaliser. A free kick from Morton just outside the Brodsworth penalty area was headed upwards, with Hunt then narrowly missing the target with her header.
Thackley continued to dominate possession and created further opportunities. Another free kick, this time just inside the home side’s penalty area, following a back-pass being picked up by the Brodsworth goalkeeper. Hunt rolled the ball to Senior, whose low, powerful effort travelled through the defensive line but was well saved by the keeper.
As the second half progressed, Thackley continued to control much of the possession and repeatedly pushed the Brodsworth defence back. However, despite their attacking pressure and some promising passages of play, they were unable to find the crucial finishing touch needed to level the score.
Georgia Clipson was shown a yellow card late in the game for kicking the ball away, but Thackley continued to fight until the final whistle.
Despite a determined second-half performance and plenty of pressure, the equaliser ultimately proved elusive. Brodsworth Main held on to secure a 2–1 victory and bring Thackley’s FA Cup campaign to an end.
There was plenty for Thackley to take from the performance, particularly the character shown after going two goals behind and the dominant spell of possession after the interval. The focus now turns back to league football, with the team looking to build on another competitive performance.
Interviewed after the game, Thackley’s manager, Yasmin Senior, said, “We are disappointed to exit the FA Cup, but proud of the way the players controlled large parts of the game despite not having our full-strength squad. Demi picking up an injury in the warm-up meant we had to adapt, but by then we unfortunately found ourselves two goals down.
We dominated possession and controlled the game for long periods, but we couldn’t find the goals we needed to get ourselves fully back into it.
It’s a disappointing result, but we enjoyed the occasion, and overall I’m pleased with the way we played.”
